Our eldest daughter is 21 today! It is so cliché, but it is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown by. As Gretchen Rubin said, "The days are long, but the years are short."
In this vlog, Angus and I share our daughter's dramatic birth story. It was the perfect foreshadowing for the unexpected nature of the journey of being parents.
One of our biggest mistakes we made where we wish we could have a do-over is not trusting our daughters' inner wisdom more during their teen years. When things got scary for us, we fell into trying to manage and control them.
We did do a little better with our second daughter, but she of course raised the ante.
Fortunately, each time we knew enough to get support. It didn't take us too long to regain our bearings so we could get out of panic mode and actually focus on listening and understanding rather than controlling and manipulating.
Luckily, we were able to rebuild rapport with both our daughters. With the privilege of hindsight, our parenting words of encouragement for you are to remember to take care of yourself and to look for your child's wisdom -- especially when you can't see it and think it isn't there.
Angus & Rohini Ross are “The Rewilders.” Listen to their podcast Rewilding Love. They believe too many good relationships fall apart because couples give up thinking their relationship problems can’t be solved. Many couples don’t know how to navigate low moods, conflict, and emotional reactivity. In this season of the Rewilding Love Podcast, Rohini and Angus help a couple on the brink of divorce due to conflict. Angus and Rohini love working with couples and helping them to reduce conflict and discord in their relationships by pointing them to their innate wisdom and wellbeing. They work with couples who are struggling and couples who would like to deepen the love and intimacy they already have. They co-facilitate private couples' intensives that rewild relationships back to their natural state of love.
